Nestled in Saughall Massie, a Wirral village dating back to the 1300s, all three Barnacre holiday cottages offer a picture-postcard setting for an unforgettable break. Two of the cottages – The Old Mill Barn and The Shippon Barn - occupy a 250 year old barn conversion, while the third – Barnacre Green Holiday Cottage – is a recent, green oak frame cottage which has a zero environmental impact. All three have their own private hot tub/jacuzzi, plus the shared use of the heated indoor pool and the one-acre Barnacre fishing lake.
Wirral is packed with things to do; vibrant Liverpool and historic Chester are minutes away and Manchester, Snowdonia, the Peak District and the Lake District are all within easy reach for days out. Whether you are looking for a slow-paced weekend break or a fantastic base for a full-on family holiday, staying in one of the Barnacre Cottages is the perfect choice.
Our 12m indoor heated swimming pool, housed in a lovely oak frame building, is shared between our three cottages and is available between 10am and 4pm every day (except Christmas Day). An informal booking system ensures its private use for each family or party staying with us. The pool is 1.2m (4ft) deep throughout, and both the pool, and the poolhouse are deliciously warm.
The pool is 1.2m (4ft) deep throughout, and both the pool, and the poolhouse are deliciously warm. Both are heated using no fossil fuels. The building includes a changing area, shower and toilet. There is no lifeguard. Each cottage has its own private outdoor hot tub / jacuzzi; each can seat 5/6 adults and has lighting and aromatherapy built in. In addition, there is a shared indoor hot tub next to the heated pool.
The fishing lake is part of the Barnacre smallholding – close to all our cottages and surrounded by farmland - making it a blissfully quiet retreat. There is a traditional green oak and lime panelled fishing cabin on the fringe of the lake, with a toilet, refreshment-making facilities and a pretty porch for any non-rod-wielding members of your party who prefer to relax out of the sun. (On a green note, all materials in the construction and fitting of the cabin were chosen for their low environmental and carbon impact. It is self-sufficient for all energy, water and waste water, so eco-aware holidaymakers can fish and relax guilt-free).
The lake is teeming with fish, including common carp to over 20lb, Mirror carp to over 20lb, bream to over 8lb, tench, perch, roach, rudd and barbel. All fish have been grown onsite or stocked from selected, licensed and insured fish suppliers with Environment Agency certification.
Wirral lies between the River Dee and the River Mersey, overlooking the Welsh Hills and the spectacular Liverpool skyline. This position creates a local climate which is extraordinarily mild, thanks to the warming effect of the peninsula’s three coasts. Wirral is not only warm, it is drier than the rest of the northwest because it occupies a rain shadow created by Snowdonia to one side and the Lancashire and Lake District hills to the other. It’s a fact that Wirral is warmer, sunnier and drier than places as little as 20 miles away - and on the coast, it is warmer still.
Barnacre’s three holiday cottages are just 1 mile from Junction 2 of the M53 motorway and 1.5 miles from Moreton Merseyrail station, which links direct into Liverpool’s Lime Street intercity station.
On arrival, once you enter Barnacre Lane, the Old Mill Barn and the Shippon Barn are on the courtyard immediately on your right. The Green Cottage is about 400 yards up the private lane ahead of you, just past the entrance to the fishing lake.
If you are using satnav, the postcode for the cottages is CH46 5NJ.
